{events}: a housewarming

I had a spare moment tonight and I figured I'd better post these sooner or later or it won't happen!  We had such a fun housewarming!  We invited everyone we could think of, including many of our new neighbors and old friends and we had such a wonderful time!  It was so great to have everyone there with us to share in the joy of buying our house.  And we're kind of in love with our backyard so we love to share it's shady goodness.  I still can't believe the trees-it's a mini paradise for us.

Our Real Estate Agent, who was kind enough to sponsor the meat for the party!

Thanks so much to everyone that came!  We love you all ;)

{update}: random thoughts on a tired day

  • I cried some sweet tears of joy this morning.  I feel so incredibly blessed right now in my life and I'm just overwhelmed with gratitude.  I have 2 amazing jobs in life where people invite me in to their most important precious moments and let me capture them all and drink them in.  It's wonderful.
  • Yesterday I was helping Stella walk with her stroller and she deliberately stopped specifically so she could pull my hand off so that she could do it BY HERSELF.  This is where it starts!!
  • Paisley is either a wonderful sweet dream of a child..or something you see out of the children-terrorizing-adults part of movie.  She just found a purple hair extension and wanted me to put it in her hair so desperately she was willing to let me put a barrette in her hair to keep it in.  Her first words: "I can't wait to show DADDY (with a super mischievious smile)!!"  Sooo naughty that one.
  • I think people are starting to think I'm becoming a home birth weirdo.  I am a little bit-but not so much that I would ever judge or be mean to anyone!  I will always support making the best decision for YOU-wherever and with whoever that may be!  My biggest hang up is education- I just want women to study and learn everything that they can so that they know what they want to do!  Promise.
  • I think I'm sold on front loading washers.  We found ours on craigslist for a smokin deal and I've been super happy so far!
  • We love our house.  I have a mountain of editing to catch up on or I would be posting pics...I really will someday!
  • I'm completely in love with a bag that costs $350.  It's on sale for $220 and still NEVER in a million years would I spend that...but I still find myself wandering back over to the site just to look at it...and see if they have a cheaper one that can measure up to it.  They don't.  I want THAT one.  I really can't tell you why...for some reason it is THE bag I WANT. (Oh, yes-and this obsession has been going on for like 6 months)  Grrr.  Seriously, it's silly but I just keep coming back to it...

{long stories}: birthing

My freshman year here at Dixie I was at a party and I talked to a guy that was completing the EMT program.  I had always been very interested in emergency medicine-but for some reason I never pictured that I could just go to school for that and then do it for a living.  So the following semester I signed up for the program and completely my EMT-basic (an awesome move for a single 19 year old because it's ALL firemen in that class...).  During my EMT training we learn how to deliver babies in an emergency situation and our nurse that trained us was from the East coast.  She went on for days about what pansies we West coast women were-that we didn't know how to labor and all we wanted was the epidural.  It was at that time that I vowed that I was a big tough girl and I wouldn't need drugs to deliver my baby!!

I went on from there to complete my EMT-Intermediate and was seriously considering the Paramedic program and suddenly had a change of heart.  It was weird-I just knew it wasn't what I was supposed to do.  So I dropped out and switched over to Digital Motion Picture Production (totally not weird to do that at all) and ended up doing the remainder of my schooling in the Visual Technologies.  Unfortunately at the time EMT-I's made $6.75 an hour and I could make WAY more than that doing just about anything else so I never really had the chance to run ambulance.  I worked as a Med Tech, and a severely over-educated lifeguard, but it always left me wondering why I had wanted to/felt so strongly to complete my EMT training.

Flash forward a few years and I was pregnant with Paisley.  I had taken this vow at this point to not take any drugs (solely because I.WAS.TOUGH...oh dear) and so I started studying up on what I needed to do to get though labor without meds.  It was looking grim.  While prego I watched one of my closest friends go through one of the most arduous inductions I had ever seen and end up with an emergency c-section and I went home and bawled.  It was terrifying.  So I checked every book they had on the subject out at the library and I read.  And read.  And read.  My EMT training had also taught me that delivering at home was a very bad idea (mostly because at the time we didn't have any Certified Nurse Midwives or really well trained midwives for that matter and by the time ambulance was called it was really bad).  So I interviewed and hired the best OB for the job and hoped for the best.  We couldn't really afford a doula (I don't know if I really knew what one of those was yet...even in all my reading) nor could we afford childbirth education classes, so we downloaded some and watched those, hoping for the best.

Considering it was my first baby and going off still limited knowledge, things went really well.  I managed to avoid any really interventions, stayed in the shower until transition-and really ultimately had an incredible experience.  At that point I thought that monitoring throughout labor was really important...and so does the hospital staff-but laying flat and not moving in bed is no way to labor, and that's ultimately what made me take the drugs.  I'm glad I did-I was so panicked and so did Jon and being in the situation that we were... I still believe it was the best thing to do!  I absolutely cannot ever look down at anyone for getting an epidural because labor is rough!

Anyway, most of that is a bit of a side note-the important thing is that when I got pregnant with Stella it renewed my efforts to learn everything I could about how to best deliver a baby.  I was surprised more and more as I really began to look into statistics and studies.  It turns out that at home with a Certified Nurse Midwife is your BEST CHANCES!!  Continual monitoring really is not necessary!   Most importantly I studied the difference between pain and suffering-they are 2 different things.  I read many amazing articles on the difference and how to manage pain.  I found several books, text books even on midwifery and even doula training and put together my birth plan.  And Stella's birth was an incredible success.  I couldn't have planned it better-it was amazing.  Hiring a midwife instead of an OB really made a difference for me, having Jon study and be better prepared made a HUGE difference, having a support system all set up and in place and knowing what to say no to and what to say yes to was key.

Wow, this is getting longer than I anticipated.  I think with Stella my attitude changed so much too. I no longer wanted to give birth naturally so that I could prove my toughness-I wanted to experience the whole thing.  I wanted to have the urge to push and be more aware of everything happening (I was not more aware-labor is crazy intense regardless).  Having her left me wanting to share this-because it is a crazy experience!  People pay crazy money to bungee jump and sky dive-giving birth is the highest of highs and the most intense experience you could ever have!

I always said back in the beginning if I went to medical school I wanted to be an OB/GYN, and now that I've learned more I've realized that I would actually be a better CNM.  Being an OB seemed so out of reach, but doing a masters in nursing seems attainable.  So lately I've been throwing the idea around...go back to school, then back to work...with such young kids...i don't know...  And then I was considering maybe becoming a doula and just working as a labor support for now..nothing medical just support.  All of this has been bouncing around in the back of my head working it's way through for months now.

And then we moved.  And went to church.  An I mentioned to someone at church that I'm interested in all of this and word quickly got around and I got a call.  And now I'm training to be a birth assistant with a Certified Nurse Midwife here in town!!  She has a small enough clientele that I shouldn't be too busy but enough that I get a taste for now.  As I sat in my first training all of the stars aligned and I felt like suddenly the last 10 years of my life have prepared me to do this-starting with my EMT training and ending with me wanting to learn more about how to be a doula.  It's all coming together and I'm so excited.

I went to my first birth last night.  I got home at 4:30 this morning.  It was amazing.

{holidays}: easters

We had a fun Easter.  It was a bit of an afterthought this year because we moved in 5 days before it happened, but the Easter bunny remembered us!  Paisley was spoiled rotten.  Her poor sister only got applesauce! lol
The best thing ever-we wake up Saturday morning to Paisley saying "Oh MY GOSH, OH MY GOSH-MOOOOMM  OH MY GOSH!!!"  She had found her Easter basket and was VERY excited.

We got to the Easter Egg Hunt at 9:55.  Jon dropped us off to go park the car and by the time he found a place to park and got Stella in the stroller it was all over (10:05).  She got super distracted by the scattered candy and did not pick up a single egg!!
We had my sis and her husband over and my parents here because they watched our kids while we were on our cruise!  It was so fun having family over to our new house!
I tried the pinterest shaving cream eggs...I didn't work out like I thought it would.  It was fun, but I was really glad my Mom brought a traditional egg dying set up.

Paisley loved lining up all of her eggs in a row to admire them.
A shaving cream egg...they just weren't as marbled and colorful as I wanted them to be...

My Dad was so funny and drew Jon and I on a boat since we left that night to go on our cruise!

{our friendship}: may be pending

Before we continue our friendship I need you to solemnly swear a couple of things:

  • that you will never put up wallpaper in your home (particularly borders)-especially with kitty cats and stars and moons.
  • that you will take the time to tape stuff off before you just start slapping paint around.
  • that you will take a moment to see if the tile really does match the other tile.
  • that you leave a note for the next owners explaining all of the super strange things that you've done to your house.
  • that salmon pink will NEVER be a color that graces your walls.
  • that you'll remember to tell the guy installing the new carpet that the floor vents are no longer necessary (rendering the holes and vents unnecessary also...)
  • and that if you're too old and senile to notice these things, that you'll hire a professional!!  Or at least get a second opinion from someone that still has their sight!!
I have sooo many questions about the craziness we're dealing with...and I would just hope that as my friend you would take care of this list-because I just feel bad for the next owner of your home if you don't!!

Befores and afters soon to come...

{homemade}: food and crisis'

So I've been going through a bit of a crisis lately...which has led to a lot of baking.  Like, a lot of baking.  I can't tell you why, but it makes me feel better.  I even made homemade pot roast and cookies yesterday...sooooo good.  For one reason or another, baking seems to soothe me.  It's weird.  We started off with Homemade Vanilla Wafers last week.  A-mazing.  Seriously.  And super good.

You can find the recipe for the homemade nillas here.  I had to milk down the batter a bit to get them to come out of the pastry bag so they turned out more bready that I would have liked...so I'll just have to make them again and try something else.  They were still delicious!!

My next project was homemade smores.  Also delicious.  I would have to say my favorite is definitely the homemade graham crackers-so much richer than store bought and sooo yummy.  I'm also in love with the homemade chocolate bars-seriously I love just straight cocoa so it's nice to be able to make them full strength dark chocolate (I just add very minimal sweetener, but you can add as much as you want).  The homemade marshmallows were delicious-I just don't love marshmallows unless they're squished between two grahams and some chocolate!!  Or in Rice Krispie treats...hmmmm...

Marshmallow recipe here.  Gotta love Martha!
Soooo gooey and delicious.  Chocolate bar recipe here.
And Graham Cracker recipe here.  Also Martha.  Love her.

We may have acquired some boxes which have kept Paisley busy busy.  She LOVES being able to box her and Stella into everything and we spent hours one day building a massive blanket/box fort.  The boxes are for packing...because we might be moving...because we hopefully bought a house!!  I hope.  We close the 15th but I just don't feel like it's actually ours until we have keys in our hands.  I'm so excited but the prospect of such a change and moving is making me stress bake non-stop!!

Also, if you're interesting in doing trade we will be needing help painting the whole house before we move in (so ideally we'll have the whole house painted in 3 days!!!)  I will cook, clean, take pictures, bake, babysit and basically do anything for anyone willing to help paint!!  Message me and let me know if you're interested!!  I'm waiting to post anything on FB until we're closer but if you can help let me know!!  I'm freaking out, and so excited!!  Wish us luck on this crazy endeavor!!

{valentines}: a tea party

So our cute friend put together a princess tea party for valentines day!  It was darling and such a fun activity for the girls!  Paisley loved dressing up all fancy and I even let her put her sparkles on her eyes-her favorite.  She came downstairs all ready-jewelry, crown, heels, sparkles...and said "let's go!"  I reminded her that she also has to wear a dress...
 Pretty eye sparkles!
This party was fancy!!  Chocolate dipped strawberries and heart shaped PB&J!  All of it was soo good ;)

Fancy princess shoes.  She could not keep her hands off the chocolate strawberries!!  ( I couldn't either)

This was the only picture that almost kind of turned out with all three girls!  She did not want her picture taken!!  Paisley and Lexie had no problem posing for the camera.  (And can I add that we did not coordinate dresses!  They all happened to come as different princesses!!)

 They love each other!

Tired princess downing a cupcake after a long day of walking in those heels!
Even Stella got to play.  Love my sweet girlies.

{park day}: and some valentines

I'm regretting not taking more pictures of my own children.  I went to the park with a friend of mine today to show her some things about how to use her camera and tried to shoot some pics of my babes as well.  All I can get from Paisley is "movement" pictures...because seriously she can't even consider holding still at a park.  Stella is just hilarious and mostly seems to be wondering what in the world I'm doing with that big black thing over my face.  She is getting so big and wants to crawl soo bad!  mmmm...I love them.  Happy Valentines!

This scowl comes straight from her Daddy.  Seriously.  It's identical.
 "What are you doing Mom?"
Best face of Paisley from the day.  Yep. lol
Her Dad surprised her and got her a box of chocolates and some flowers too.  She was so excited!! And a bit nude (she was quite dirty after the park).  Is it weird that my child rarely wears clothes at home?  She just doesn't like to and I have a hard time keeping them on her...
We also went to an awesome Princess Valentines Party and I'll be posting some of those pics soon!!
